When You Don’t Feel Heard: A Message for Expecting and New Moms

One of the most common things I hear from the mothers I work with isn’t about the pain or the process of birth—it’s this: “I didn’t feel heard.”

Whether it was confusion about medical decisions, fear during labor, or feeling dismissed when something didn’t feel right, many moms share that they walked away from their birth experience carrying unspoken grief, not just from what happened, but from how they were treated.

At Sage & Stone Holistic Counseling, I’ve sat with mothers who say:

  • “No one explained why I needed a Cesarean.”
  • “They made decisions about me, but not with me.”
  • “I felt like I wasn’t allowed to ask questions.”

And here’s what I want every expecting and new mother to know:
Your voice matters. Your experience matters. You deserve to be heard.

So many prenatal classes focus on the birth plan, but few prepare you for how quickly plans can shift and how disorienting that can be, especially if you’re left out of the conversation. Cesarean births, for example, are more common than most realize (about 1 in 3 births in the U.S.), yet the emotional preparation for them is often missing.

Feeling unheard during birth can lead to lingering emotional distress—something that too often gets overlooked in the postpartum period. You may look fine on the outside, but inside, you might still be carrying confusion, sadness, or even trauma.

Here’s what support looks like:

  • A space where you can tell your story without judgment.
  • Time to process not just the facts of what happened, but how it felt.
  • Validation that your concerns are real and worthy of attention.

At Sage & Stone, we create that space for you. Whether you’re preparing for birth or reflecting on an experience that didn’t go as planned, you don’t have to carry it alone.

Let this be your reminder: You are allowed to speak up. You are allowed to ask questions. And above all, you deserve to be heard.

🌿 You’re Invited:

If this resonates with you, I invite you to schedule a free 15-minute consultation to explore how we can support your emotional well-being before or after birth.

And if you’re seeking community, join our free monthly support group for NICU and postpartum moms—held every 4th Wednesday of the month. It’s a safe, welcoming space to share, reflect, and connect with others who understand.
