Search social media for “cortisol,” and you’ll find countless posts blaming it for everything from belly fat and insomnia to hormone imbalance and fatigue. While chronic stress certainly affects our health, cortisol itself is not the enemy. In fact, without cortisol, life would not be possible.
As a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Integrative Health Practitioner, Mental Health Counselor, and Hormone & Wellness Provider, I spend a great deal of time helping clients understand that hormones are not “good” or “bad.” They are messengers. Our job is to understand what they are trying to tell us.
Let’s take a closer look at one of the body’s most important hormones.
What Is Cortisol?
Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands under the direction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. It follows a natural circadian rhythm, rising in the early morning to help us wake up and gradually declining throughout the day so our bodies can prepare for restful sleep.
This rhythm is essential for maintaining energy, regulating inflammation, supporting immune function, stabilizing blood sugar, and helping us adapt to physical and emotional stress.
Why Cortisol Is Essential
Healthy cortisol supports nearly every major organ system.
Its functions include:
- Maintaining healthy blood sugar between meals
- Supporting blood pressure
- Regulating inflammation
- Coordinating immune responses
- Providing energy during times of stress
- Supporting memory and concentration
- Maintaining a healthy sleep-wake cycle
Without cortisol, even routine daily activities would be impossible.
When Stress Becomes Chronic
Stress itself isn’t harmful. In fact, short-term stress is protective.
The challenge arises when the body never has an opportunity to recover.
Today’s stressors often include:
- Poor sleep
- Busy schedules
- Parenting and caregiving
- Work-related burnout
- Financial pressures
- Blood sugar instability
- Overtraining
- Chronic inflammation
- Anxiety and depression
- Hormonal transitions such as perimenopause and menopause
When these stressors persist, the body’s stress response can become dysregulated, contributing to fatigue, mood changes, disrupted sleep, cravings, weight changes, and reduced resilience.
Signs Your Stress Response May Need Attention
You may benefit from a comprehensive evaluation if you experience:
- Waking tired despite adequate sleep
- Feeling “wired but exhausted”
- Brain fog
- Afternoon energy crashes
- Difficulty managing stress
- Increased abdominal weight
- Cravings for sugar or caffeine
- Anxiety or irritability
- Poor recovery after exercise
- Low motivation or decreased resilience
These symptoms are not specific to cortisol alone and can also reflect thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies, sleep disorders, mood disorders, medication effects, or other medical conditions. A personalized assessment is important before drawing conclusions.
Supporting Healthy Cortisol Rhythms
Rather than focusing on “lowering cortisol,” consider supporting your body’s natural rhythm:
- Prioritize seven to nine hours of quality sleep.
- Eat balanced meals with adequate protein and fiber.
- Engage in regular movement while avoiding chronic overtraining.
- Practice mindfulness, breathwork, yoga, or meditation.
- Build meaningful social connections.
- Seek support for anxiety, depression, trauma, or chronic stress.
- Work with a qualified healthcare professional when symptoms persist.
The Sage & Stone Restoration Method™
At Sage & Stone, we ask a different question.
Instead of asking, “Is cortisol high or low?” we ask:
Why is the body asking for help?
Through personalized hormone evaluation, mental health care, nutrition, lifestyle medicine, specialty laboratory testing when appropriate, and evidence-informed treatment plans, our goal is to help restore health—not simply manage symptoms.
🌿 The Sage & Stone Restoration Prescription™
🥗 Eat
One of the most powerful ways to support healthy cortisol rhythms is by stabilizing blood sugar through balanced nutrition. Prioritize protein, fiber, healthy fats, and colorful whole foods while limiting highly processed foods and excessive added sugars.
💪 Move
Aim for regular movement that challenges your body without exhausting it. A combination of strength training, walking, mobility work, and restorative exercise helps build resilience while supporting hormone and metabolic health.
😴 Sleep
Create a consistent sleep routine by limiting screens before bed, maintaining a regular bedtime, and allowing yourself adequate time for restorative sleep.
🧘 Regulate
Spend five to ten minutes each day practicing diaphragmatic breathing, mindfulness, prayer, yoga, or another calming practice. Small, consistent moments of regulation help support a healthier stress response over time.
